It’s weird, I’ve been thinking about him a lot lately, and then recently he sent me this book that he’s written, and it’s violent and it’s sad, and he titled it Nocturnal Animals and he dedicated it to me.

I love Falsettos with my whole heart, but I think that, as a young person, I can’t fully understand how important it was when it was first produced, in the middle of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

William Finn looked at the thousands of people dying, blatantly ignored by the government and the public opinion, and he decided that his musical about a neurotic non conventional family needed another act. He decided to speak up, in the best way his profession allowed him.

Hundreds of LGBT people sat in a theatre in the dark and watched the same story they had witnessed with their own eyes performed in front of them. They saw their loved ones in Stephen Bogardus’ stumbling steps and in his anger during “You gotta die sometime”. They heard themselves in Michael Ruperts’ desperate voice and in his words during “What would I do?”

Hundreds of people probably laughed at Chip Zien’s “Homosexuals” at the beginning of the act, but I bet when he repeated it at the end you could hear a penny drop. I bet whoever had the chance of seeing the first production of Falsettoland or Falsettos left the room in silence and with goose bumps.

William Finn took a topic people tried to avoid at all costs and shoved it in everyone’s face. He took Reaganist Americans, sat them down and said: “This is what is going on. This is what thousands of people have been going through for the last ten years. This is what happens when you stigmatize minorities. This is what happens when you turn away. This is something we can’t accept anymore. This where we take a stand.”

I love this show for its brilliant music, its witty lyrics and the amazing performances of the actors of the 2016 revival, but I know this is more important than a simple well-written musical. Even if I can’t fully understand it.

Y’all should really listen to the Falsetto’s revival recording. It’s a really beautiful story about an LGBTQ man’s relationship with his ex wife,son, and his lover along with their own struggles and demons. Makes me sob every time I listen to it.

so, first off, it’s written by becky albertalli, the genius who brought us “simon vs the homo sapiens agenda”, so you know it’s good. without this woman there would be no love simon, so the least we can do is support her other books. and ohhh, how good this book is.

when it comes to representation, this book really is not like anything else i’ve ever experienced.

let’s start with the fat rep. the main character, molly, is a fat girl who doesn’t hate her body and doesn’t want to lose weight, but still feels self-conscious and anxious about what other people might think of her size. upside is a perfect and thoughtful discussion of body confidence that is extraordinarily empowering, and the most vital thing of all is that molly’s weight is never treated like a problem to be solved. it feeds into her confidence issues - molly also takes medication to help with anxiety - but it’s never “fat girl learns to love herself despite her weight”, but rather “fat girl falls in love, and realises that other people are just as capable of falling in love with her”. as someone who has struggled with body confidence, there were so many little details in this book that i could relate to that i hadn’t even realised i was doing or thinking. when a book has the power to teach you about yourself, you know it’s special.

and the lgbtq+ rep - it’s so bizarrely wonderful that upside, a book about a straight girl falling in love with a straight guy, still has some of the most quietly powerful lgbtq+ rep i’ve read. molly’s twin sister cassie is described as queer, and they have two moms; there’s pansexual and bisexual rep, and also characters who aren’t precisely labelled, and the characters who use labels and those who don’t are all portrayed as equally valid.

the lgbtq+ relationships are wonderfully done because it isn’t made into an issue, but the relationships are still deep and layered.

and, y'know, there’s an adorable soft wlw garden wedding.

and on top of all that there’s characters of different races and jewish characters and just the whole shebang. it’s great.

also, the characters are so damn wonderful.

there’s a big family focus, and the dynamics involved there are brilliantly done. all the family and friends are great characters.

the love interest is, arguably, about on the same level of preciousness as simon’s love interest. honest. i love him that much.

and molly herself - bless this girl. funny and sweet and kind and anxious and smart and totally creative. bless this girl.

love the hilarious light style of love simon/svthsa? same applies here.

love how love simon/svthsa are still extraordinarily touching despite the humour? same applies here.

upside is such a sunny book. i don’t really know how to explain this. it’s got wedding preparations and summer holidays and part-time jobs and running through the rain and sitting on a porch making beads and july 4th and arty shops and decorating plates and it’s just the literal perfect lovely sunny summer read. just trust me on this.

it’s also so warm and uplifting. it has difficult discussions about change and family and growing apart, but every single character is inherently a good person, even those who are most heavily flawed.

becky albertalli at it again with realistic friendship groups that aren’t flat stereotypes or cliques, in which each person has their own particular interests and issues! love it!

somehow, becky albertalli has managed to make a grocery store the setting of some of her best written scenes of all, in all three of her books so far published. i have no idea how she manages it, but trust me: there’s supermarket shopping, and then there’s becky albertalli supermarket shopping.

forget oreos. mini eggs and cookie dough is where it’s at.

i promise you that you will smile and smile and smile again reading this book. it’s impossible not to. it’s just that precious. and it’s so easy to read, and reread - i loved it the first time round, but when i reread it i loved it even more.

upside is one of the loveliest, happiest, most precious and wonderful books i own, that’s uplifting and adorable and funny and great on every single page…

… and if all that hasn’t convinced you, upside takes place in the same universe as simon, abby is molly’s cousin, and our blessed smol bean simon spier himself has some cameos.

and they’re precious. boy, are they precious.
